Students will write a short paragraph(3-5) sentences and explain how an author can create indirect characterization.

For example , you can start your pararaph like this :

An author can use dialogue to tell us more about a character.

Think of 3 or more elements that will help you as a reader to make conclusions(inferences) about a character.

Imagery - how the author physically describes a person or situation

Figurative language- Similes, metaphors, etc

Diction - a characters words or actions(noted by author) that makes you infer about a characters personality or relationship with other characters

An author can use dialogue to tell us more about a character. Authors can also help us get a better idea of the character by briefly describing minor or major details about the person. When reading, if an author has made a character talk a certain way or punctuate their words in a certain way, it gives you an idea of how the character actually is and sort of gives them a tone. Lastly I think what an author could do to tell us more about a character is give us smaller details about the setting or what environment the character is in so we can really get an idea of how this character is living or what they’re surrounded by!
