Three less than a number is 14 more than 2 times that number. What is the number?

Answer:

-20 = - 20

Explanation:

Suppose the number is x

three less than a number means x - 3 which is equal to 14 more than twice a number means 2x +14.

So we can write

x - 3 = 2x +14 - - - - - A

subtract x from both sides

x - x - 3 = 2x - x +14

-3 = x +14

Subtract 14 from both sides

-3 - 14 = x +14 - 14

-17 = x

Or x = - 17

Now can verify our answer by putting the value of x in Eq A

-17 - 3 = 2 x (-17) +14

-20 = - 34 +14

-20 = - 20
