f(x) = ax + b

substitute f(0) = 5 and f(2) = - 3 to find a and b

f(0) = a(0) + b = 5 , then b = 5 , so

f(x) = ax + 5

f(2) = 2a + 5 = - 3

2a + 5 = - 3 ( subtract 5 from both sides )

2a = - 8 ( divide both sides by 2 )

a = - 4

f(x) = - 4x + 5 ← equation of linear function
