area = length × length ( in a square)

area of larger portion = (x + 3 ) × (x + 3 ) = x² + 6x + 3

area of smaller portion = (x - 2) × (x - 2 ) = x² - 4x + 4

area of shaded region = area of larger portion – area of smaller portion

= ( x² + 6x + 3) – ( x² - 4x + 4)

= x² + 6x + 3 - x² + 4x -4

= 10x – 1

area of shaded region = 10x – 1
