The lives at African Americans were almost immediately back to slavery in a sense because the south knew how to get around laws so the African Americans weren’t completely back to slavery but they did not get to have the rights that the Union had worked so hard for. The south was in ruins so it had to surrender. When Abe Lincoln was assassinated the entire country went through a bit of a rough patch but we ended up getting through it.
