Power is divided between state, Federal, and local government known as Federalism. Power is also divided among the three major branches- legislative, judicial, and executive.

Legislative branch can make laws, however executive branch can veto them. The legislative branch can override that veto and still pass the law. If the law violates the constitution then the judicial branch can strike it down. Legislative branch can amend the constitution to override the judicial branch. Legislative branch can impeach justices and presidents, and executive branch can nominate justices. Hope this helps
