The two points are 4 units away in the x-direction (found by 1-(-3)) and 3 units away in the y-direction (found by 2-(-1)). We then square both numbers, add them together, then take the square root to find the distance.

4^2(also known as 4x4)+3^2(also known as 3x3)=25

We then take the square root of 25, which is 5.
