Answer:

3. 9

4. 5 pounds

5. 5/12 of a pound

Explanation:

3. "at least 3/8" means to include that column in the count.

4. 3(1/4) + 4(3/8 ) + 3(1/2) + 2(5/8)

= 3/4 + 12/8 + 3/2 + 10/8 but we need a common denominator. LMK in the comments if you need help with that

= 6/8 + 12/8 + 12/8 + 10/8

= 40/8

= 5 pounds.

5. For the average, we add up all the weights, then divide by the number of kittens. Thankfully, we just added everything up in #4. Since we're going to be dividing 5 by 12, we'll end up with a decimal. But since the whole problem was written in fractions, we'll keep it in fractions.

40/8 divided by 12 kittens

40/8 divided by 12 = 40/8 muliplied by the inverse of 12 which is 1/12

40/8 x 1/12

= 40/96

Our numerator and denominator can be evenly dived by 8, so the fraction is reduced to

= 5/12
