The globe theatre, built in 1599, hosted many of William Shakespeare's plays. Unfortuanately during the 1633 performance of Henry VIII and fir broke out, again in 1644. The Globe came close to forgetting when, in 1989, its foundations were discovered on the south bank of the River Thames. In 1993, the actor Sam Wanamaker began to rebuild it and after 4 years it finally re-opened in 1997. Since then, millions of people have visited it and many plays have been performed there
