A shopkeeper keeps a record of the number of items he sells. Of the items he sold on a day, 46% were newspapers, 1/4 were pens, 0.12 were chocolates while the remaining were other assorted items. What percent of the items sold were assorted items?

Explanation:

The total number would be 100%, or 1. So,

Newspapers + Pens + Chocolates + Assorted Items = 1

46% = 0.46

1 / 4 = 0.25

0.12 = 0.12

So, substitute these numbers into the problem.

0.46 + 0.25 + 0.12 + assorted items = 1

Simplify.

0.83 + assorted items = 1

Subtract 0.83 from both sides.

Assorted items = 0.17, or 17%

So, 17% of the items sold were assorted items.
