A right triangle is formed by h, the radius and the slant height

Given diameter = 16, then radius = 16 ÷ 2 = 8

Using Pythagoras' identity in the right triangle with legs h and 8 and hypotenuse the slant height, then

h² + 8² = 17²

h² + 64 = 289 ( subtract 64 from both sides )

h² = 225 ( take the square root of both sides )
