first you have to realize how the quadrants are positioned start top right and number 1 through 4 counter clockwise.

then you have to realize the number values in the quadrants

1 (x,y) 2 (-x,y) 3(-x,-y) 4( x,-y)

x<0 and y<0 both x and y are less than zero therefor quadrant 3
