Help me! Here goes the question...

Tom is going to buy 25 plants to make a hedge.
Here is information about the cost of buying the plants.
Kirsty's plants are £2.39 each
Hedge World are pack of 25 and £5.20 plus VAT at 20%

Tom wants to buy the 25 plants as cheaply as possible. Should Tom buy the plants from Kirsty's plants or from Hedge World?
You must show all your working out but if not then unfortunately I have to report.
I will give 35 points only to those who writes out the explanation clearly.

Answer:

Tom should buy the plants from Kirsty as 59.75 < 63.

Explanation:

Tom is going to buy 25 plants to make a hedge.

  • Kirsty's plants : £2.39 each
  • Hedge World : pack of 25 = £52.50 plus VAT at 20%

Cost of buying plants from Kirsty: 2.39 x 25 = £59.75

Long multiplication:

2.39

x 25

- - - -

11.95

47.80

- - - - -

59.75

Cost of buying plants from hedge world:

10% of £52.50 = 5.25

so 20% of £52.50 = 5.25 x 2 = 10.50

total cost = 52.50 + 10.50 = £63

So Tom should buy the plants from Kirsty as 59.75 < 63.
