Lance had dreamed of opening his own lemonade stand since the

beginning of summer. He would sell lots of lemonade and make tons
of money! After days of preparation, he was ready. He squeezed
lemons all morning, added sugar until it was just right, and dragged his
table out to the curb. He looked across the street in horror. Sammy, the
neighbor, had a lemonade stand too! "Hi Lance!" Sammy said. "This
lemonade stand is going to make me rich this summer!"
Lance stared at his neighbor. He had never been so boiling mad in his
life.

Answer:

The statement which best explains how Lance's motivation leads to a conflict in the story is:

C. Lance's desire to make money with his lemonade stand causes him to get angry when his neighbor has the same idea.

Step-by-step explanation:

According to the passage, Lance wants to make a lot of money, but not necessarily needs to. Since letter A speaks of his needing money, we can eliminate it. Also, Lance does not confront or intimidate anyone in the story, which eliminates options B and D. He does get angry because he did not expect his neighbor to have the same idea. And if they are both going to sell the same thing on the same street, they are both likely to make less money than what they were hoping for. Thus, we can choose letter C as the best option:

C. Lance's desire to make money with his lemonade stand causes him to get angry when his neighbor has the same idea.
