Thus,


x^(2) + (√(40))^2 = (√(50))^2


x^(2) + 40 = 50


x^(2) = 50 - 40


x^(2) = 10


x = √(10)


x=3.16

b) Now, the area of the small square is


A= x^(2)


A=(3.16)^2


A=9.99
