Hope the below helps! I found this question in the Arts section, you might want to try putting your question in the English section next time as more people will likely answer it :)

Step-by-step explanation:

Shakespeare could be giving his audience a lesson on regicide (the killing of a king). This was deemed morally wrong and if found guilty, punishable by death. Macbeth at this point was unsure if he wanted to go through with this crime and this can been seem through the quote "we will proceed no further in the business".

We can also see within this extract that Lady Macbeth taunts Macbeth and is the driving force. This links to the theme of ambition and could be Macbeth's hamartia. The Jacobean Era was very hierarchical and this can be seen in Shakespeare's play. Lady Macbeth had no authority or power, so used manipulation to get the male figure to follow out the killing. Throughout Macbeth, there are many references to the patriarchal society. Quotes such as "then you were a man" and "so much more than a man" support this. (Although this doesn't link to the thanes/lords, it is a key part of social representation and behaviours)

In Shakespeare's era, James I had the distinction of being the first monarch to rule both England and Scotland. In focusing on Macbeth, a figure from Scottish history, Shakespeare paid homage to his king's Scottish lineage and this is one of the reasons why social values and behaviours is important in Macbeth.
