Why did Friar Laurence (The Priest) decide to send a letter instead of telling Romeo himself about the devised plan?

Answer:

Because if he would tell Romeo himself, then there was a chance that, Romeo would try to ruin the plan on purpose, or accidentally. And the letter was sure to arrive right when the plan was executed, therefore there were supposed to be no mess-up's.
