2. A piece of string, 65 inches long, is cut into two sections. The second section is four

times the length of the first. How long is each section?

Short piece = 13 inches

Long piece = 52 inches.

Explanation:

Let the first piece be x inches

The second piece = 4x

Together they equal 5x

x + 4x = 5x

5x = 65 inches. Divide both sides by 5

5x/5 = 65/5

x = 13 inches

So the shorter piece is 13 inches

The second piece is 13 * 4 = 52
