The cask of amontillado

The story's timeline never shows why Montresor waited years to tell this story. Would you say
Montresor is very prideful (takes deep pleasure) and adores the attention from his audience or
does Edgar Allen Poe use his character and the fact that he waits years to share this story an act
of repenting for one's "sins" or actions? Explain.

Answer:

Montresor fought with Fortunato and told him to stop insulting him. Fortunato eventually insulted Montresor again Montresor stopped being friends with Fortunato because all the insults he received.

So, they stopped being friends for a long time. Their paths would always come across many times due to business. Fortunato still considered Montresor a friend, but not an important one, even though he would always insult him.

After not seeing each other for a while, their paths crossed once again at a Carnival. Fortunato being drunk then says, “Why did we ever become friends I never liked you at all, I just felt bad for you because you were always alone”. Montresor was truly angry with this, that he lured Fortunato into a catacomb where he keeps his wine under his house and left him to die.
