After one side of a square was enlarged by 2 inches and the other side was enlarged

by 3 inches, the area of the shape was doubled.
What was the side of the square?

6 inches

basically, first write an equation

2x^2 = x^2 + 5x + 6

then simplify this into

x^2 = 5x + 6

then use sum-product pattern and factor

(x - 6)(x + 1) = 0

then split into two equations

x - 6 = 0, x + 1 = 0

so, you have x = 6 and x = -1

because it can't be negative, 6 is your answer
