A truck can be rented from Company A for $160 a day plus 0.60 per mile. Company B charges $80 a day plus 0.70 per mile to rent the same truck. Find the number of miles in a day at which the rental costs for Company A and Company B are the same.

Company A charges a flat rate of $160 a day, and $0.60 per mile:

total = 0.60m + 160

Company B charges a flat rate of $80 a day, and $0.70 per mil:

total = 0.70m + 80

Set both equations equal to each other:

0.60m + 160 = 0.70m + 80

Isolate the variable, m. Note the equal sign, what you do to one side, you do to the other. Subtract 0.70m and 160 from both sides:

0.60m (-0.70m) + 160 (-160) = 0.70m (-0.70m) + 80 (-160)

0.60m - 0.70m = 80 - 160

Simplify:

-0.10m = -80

Isolate the variable, m. Divide -0.10 to both sides:

(-0.10m)/(-0.10) = (-80)/(-0.10)

m = 80/0.10

m = 800
