Explanation:

Let us assume the no of children and no of adults swam that day be x and y

Now as per the question

The following equations are

x + y = 431

we can write as

x = 431 - y

1.50x + 2y = $825.50

1.50(431 - y) + 2y = $825.50

646.50 - 1.50y + 2y = 825.50

0.5y = 179

y = 358

And x = 431 - 358

= 73

Hence, the no of children and no of adults swam that day is 73 and 358 respectively
