A trench is a type of excavation or in the ground that is generally deeper than it is wide, and narrow compared with its length. In geology, trenches result from erosion by rivers or by geological movement of tectonic plates.

In engineering, a foundation is the element of a structure which connects it to the ground, transferring loads from the structure to the ground. Foundations are generally considered either shallow or deep.

Answer:

Trench is a a long, narrow ditch. Foundation is to distribute the weight from load-bearing walls to the soil or bedrock beneath. It's also to keep groundwater or soil moisture out.
