To answer the question, if somehow both nations involved had been able to sustain the status quo of the Cold War up to this point, I suppose we would live in a world that was highly militarized and regimented, with children doing "duck and cover" drills in school and families stocking bomb shelters at home, and that the cooperative efforts the world has seen in science, medicine, and technology since the launching of the international space station would never have occurred. The world would be a poorer place. It has changed for the better since the Cold War ended.
