In this problem, 12 and 3 are the coefficients and two Xs are the variables. When a coefficient is next to a variable there is an invisible multiplication sign. So you could rewrite the problem as follows:

12 × x × 3 × x =

So now you can multiply what are the same. You can multiply the coefficients together and the x variables together as follows:

12 × 3 = 36

x × x = x²

Then you put the answers together and make the multiplication sign invisible again to get the following answer:

12x × 3x = 36x²

36x^2 or 36 times x squared.

Explanation:

If x was two it would equal 144. If you replace x with two in my simplification it also equals 144.
