Explanation:

Pythagorean theorem states that a²+b²=c²

Through observation, I assumed that 8 was the hypotenuse

I sqaured both the known lengths of the leg and hypotenuse and plugged them into the equation: a²+36=64

I subtracted 36 from 64 leaving me with 28=a²

Then in order to isolate the variable I had to apply square root to both values, cancelling the "²" and leaving me with √28=a
