Cotθ = 1/tanθ = adjacent/opposite

From the diagram attached,

cotθ = 12/a................... Equation 1

But we can find the value of a by using pythagoras theorem

13² = 12²+a²

169 = 144+a²

a² = 169-144

a² = 25

a = √25

a = 5.

Substitute the value of a into equation 1

Therefore,

cotθ = 12/5

(1+cotθ) =(12/5)+1 = (5+12)/5
