The difference between Spinal Cord and Backbone is easy to understand: Spinal Cord is the tube-like structure which consists of bundles of nerve fibers. It is covered by the meninges and is surrounded by the cerebrospinal fluid. Backbone or the spinal column is the central axis of the skeleton in all vertebrates.

“Backbone” isn’t really a medical term but refers to the bony structures or vertebral column, which surrounds the spinal cord. The vertebral column is made of the individual vertebrae - 7 cervical, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar + sacral. The spinal cord runs in a central canal within the vertebral column, so is protected by the bony structures of the vertebrae.
