If f(x) = 2x − 5, then what is the value of f(4x − 1)?

Explanation:

well, you put the input term into the place of the original variable (as with any actual constant value) :

f(4x-1) = 2(4x-1) - 5 = 8x - 2 - 5 = 8x - 7

we could call this now g(x) (= f(4x - 1)).
