Feudalism was a hierarchical social system built around concessions, property and hereditary privileges, which the monarchy handed over to a ruling class as a reward for their services and their political and especially military loyalty during the Middle Ages in Europe.

In this system, only the nobility had a monopoly on the mills, presses, ovens, hunting and fishing, as well as the highest positions in society, thereby controlling it both politically and economically. Thus, the other inhabitants had to submit to the will of the nobility in order to survive.
