The especially harsh winter of 1777-1778 put the American army to the test, and hundreds of the 11,000 soldiers stationed at Valley Forge died of disease. The suffering soldiers, on the other hand, were kept together by their devotion to the Patriot cause and to General Washington, who remained with his men.
