The UN's role in the Congo in 1960 after it gained independence was:
- To remove Belgian troops that were trying to take over the Congo again
- To prevent Joseph Mobutu from seizing power
The UN did not have a role in trying to keep the Soviet Union from becoming involved in the Congo, nor did it have a role in trying to regain control of provinces that were trying to secede. Additionally, the UN did not have a role in assassinating communist leader Patrice Lumumba.
