the system bestowed many privileges on the upper castes while sanctioning repression of the lower castes by privileged groups. it was often criticised for being unjust and regressive, it remained virtually unchanged for centuries, trapping people into fixed social orders from which it was impossible to escape. it is a social hierarchy passed down through families, and it can dictate the professions a person can work in as well as aspects of their social lives, including whom they can marry.

Answer:

The caste system had a significant impact on life in ancient India, as it dictated many aspects of social and economic life. The caste system was hierarchical, with the highest castes at the top and the lowest castes at the bottom. The highest castes, known as the brahmin and kshatriya castes, held a significant amount of power and privilege, while the lowest castes, known as the shudra and untouchable castes, were often subject to discrimination and exploitation.
