Let's say that your friend's lunch costs x dollars, that means your's cost 19 - x dollars because of the first statement. From the second statement, we can make the equation

19 - x = 3 + x

19 + 3 = x + x

22 = 2x

2x = 22

x = 22 ÷ 2 = 11

So your friend's lunch costs 11 dollars
