Three friends went to the movies. Each movie ticket cost $8. 50. Each person ordered a drink for $4. 75. Two friends also bought popcorn. The group spent a total of $53. 75. The friends used the equation 3(8. 50+4. 75)+2p=53. 75 to find how much one order of popcorn, p, cost. Which is the cost for one order of popcorn?

Answer is popcorn “p” = $7

Step by step

Using the given equation
3(8.50 + 4.75) +2p = 53.75
Distribute

3(13.25) + 2p = 53.75

39.75 + 2p = 53.75

Subtract 39.75 from both sides to isolate p

39.75 - 39.75 + 2p = 53.75 - 39.75

2p = 14

Divide both sides by 2 to solve for p

2/2 p = 14/2

p = 7

Popcorn is $7 each
