3x represents number of quarters

We'll multiply each of those times the value of the coin they represent, and make that equal to the total amount of money Mark has to get the value of x

x(0.05) + 3x(0.25) = 1.60

0.05x + 0.75x = 1.60

0.80x = 1.60

x = 2 = number of nickels

So 3x = 6 = number of quarters

Checking the math:

2(0.05) + 6(0.25)= 0.10 + 1.50 = 1.60
