The Latin American countries were exploited for their resources much like Africa. European countries took raw materials from Latin America and processed them in Europe.

In doing this, Latin American economies were not very industrialized such that when they got independence, they were quite underdeveloped. Compounding this problem was the fact that most of them had to fight for their independence which further devastated their economic capacity.
