1. Mary has 5 apples, 7 bananas and 6 pears. Martin has 8 apples, 5 bananas and 10 pears. They let a stand for

the number of apples, b for the number of bananas and p for the number of pears. They put their fruit together and
represented it with the expression 5a + 7b+ 6p+ 8a + 5b 10p. After they combine their fruit, what would the
coefficient of b be?
a
b
The coefficient of b is 12
The coefficient of b is 13
1 point
c. The coefficient of b is 41

Answer:

Explanation:

Let "x", "y" and "z" be the cost pf one apple, one banana, and one pear.

5x + 6y = 8y + 9z

5x + 6y - 8y = 9z

5x - 2y = 9z ---(1)

Given that :

One apple costs as much as 2 pears.

x = 2z

Applying the value of x in (1), we get

5(2z) - 2y = 9z

10z - 9z = 2y

z = 2y

The cost of 1 pear is equal to 2 bananas.
