A rectangular solar panel has a length that is 11 inches shorter than 4 times it’s width. If the perimeter of the panel is 178 inches, what are the dimensions of the panel?

Answer:

  • The width of the panel is 20 inches

Let the width be x, then the length is 4x - 11.

The perimeter of the rectangle is:

  • 2(x + 4x - 11) = 178

Solve it for x:

  • 2(5x - 11) = 178
  • 5x - 11 = 89
  • 5x = 100
  • x = 20
