Answer: x = −
(y)/(2) - 1

Steps for solving linear equation.

y = − 2x − 2

Swap sides so that all variable terms are on the left-hand side.

−2x − 2 = y

Add 2 to both sides.

−2x = y + 2

Divide both sides by −2.

(-2x)/(-2) =
(y + 2)/(-2)

Dividing by −2 undoes the multiplication by −2.

x =
(y+2)/(-2)

Divide y + 2 by −2.

x = -
(y)/(2) - 1
