During the westward expansion, many conflicts arose. States at that time had a balance between free states and slaves states. When westward expansion began, the threat of slave states became inevitable. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 solved the issue for only a short time, as later more states came into the Union. Slavery continued to be an issue for many years to come after these efforts, however.
