3x - y = - 4 → (2)

add (1) and (2) term by term to eliminate x

0 - 5y = - 5

- 5y = - 5 ( divide both sides by - 5 )

y = 1

substitute y = 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for x

substituting into (2)

3x - 1 = - 4 ( add 1 to both sides )

3x = - 3 ( divide both sides by 3 )

x = - 1

solution is (- 1, 1 )
