When you begin to hear sniffling and coughing at school and everywhere else you go, you can be fairly certain that cold and flu season has arrived. Nobody enjoys feeling miserable and being sick, but the good news is that there are ways to lower your chances of picking up a nasty bug. Flu shots are very effective and readily available. Washing your hands on a regular basis is essential if you hope to avoid getting sick. Remember to use plenty of soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Lastly, try to avoid coming into contact with people who are showing signs of being ill.
Over–the–counter medications are the preferred choice for many cold and flu sufferers, but there are other things you can try to feel better. Drinking plenty of fluids is extremely important, as they will prevent you from becoming dehydrated. Other things that might help include gargling with salt water and using a humidifier. Finally, as it turns out, a bowl of steaming chicken soup really can ease symptoms. Mom was right all along!
