Answer: x = 1, y = -1

Explanation:

To solve this system by elimination, we will set it up so both of the y, or x, variables have opposite coefficients.

3x - 5y = 8

2x+ 3y = -1

3(3x - 5y = 8)

5(2x+ 3y = -1)

9x - 15y = 24

10x + 15y = -5

The 15y and -15y cancel each other out, so we're left with 9x + 10x on the left side and 24 - 5 on the right side of the equation.

19x = 19

x = 19/19

x = 1

Now, we will plug this back into one of the equations to solve for y.

3x - 5y = 8

3(1) - 5y = 8

3 - 5y = 8

-5y = 5

y = -1
