Set equations:

  • y = x + 2 (consecutive even numbers are 2 apart)
  • 3y = x + 10

Substitute the value of y into the second equation:

  • 3(x + 2) = x + 10
  • 3x + 6 = x + 10
  • 3x - x = 10 - 6
  • 2x = 4
  • x = 2

Find y:

  • y = 2 + 2
  • y = 4
