Answer:

Explanation:

Number of cans of peas = x

Cost of 'x' cans of peas = x *0.85 = 0.85x

Number of cans of corn = y

Cost of 'y' cans of corn = 0.78*y = 0.78y

Number of cans of peas = number of cans of corn + 2

x = y + 2 --------------(I)

x - y = 2 ----------------(II)

Total cost = $ 6.59

0.85x + 0.78y = 6.59 -------------(III)

Substitute x = y +2 in equation (III)

0.85(y + 2) + 0.78y = 6.59

0.85y + 1.70 + 0.78y = 6.59

0.85y + 0.78y = 6.59- 1.70

1.63y = 4.89

y = 4.89/1.63

y = 3

Number of cans of corn = 3

Plugin y = 3 in equation (I)

x = 3 + 2

x = 5

Number of cans of peas = 5
