The U.S. entered World War I because Germany embarked on a deadly gamble. Germany sank many American merchant ships around the British Isles which prompted the American entry into the war.

Americans knew they were a major force that could get things done, and they knew Germany was using unregulated warfare and planning against them with the Zimermann note ( it’s like a coded not for communication). The sinking of several American merchant ships off the coast of the British Isles caused the United States to enter the war.
