Until the mid-twentieth century, African-Americans in the South were subject to a legalized
system of racial discrimination. They were forced to use separate public facilities, which
were usually inferior to those for white Americans. Such discrimination affected virtually all
aspects of life for African Americans, including transportation, housing, education, and
medical care.
