Stephanie baked a cake and cut it

into 15 equal pieces. She put icing
on 9 pieces. Tammy baked the same
size cake and cut her cake into 5
equal pieces. How many pieces of
cake should Tammy put icing on so
that it is equivalent to the amount
of icing on Stephanie's cake?

Answer: 3 pieces

Explanation:

This problem can be solved by modeling the problem using equivalent fractions.

We know Stephanie put icing on 9 of her 15 pieces, this gives us a fraction of
(9)/(15).

Tammy cut her cake in 5 pieces, but we do not know how many were iced, the pieces of iced cake will be our variable, x, so her fraction is
(x)/(5).

Both of the fractions need to be equivalent so
(9)/(15) =(x)/(5), which can be solved for x = 3 pieces.
