Omg I'm reading about this too since I'm in Time Period 5. Basically the death of Whigs created the Republican Party and the "Know Nothing" Party. As growing issues of Slavery became the main issue it killed the Whig party with the Kansas Nebraska Act 1854 finishing it, well actually when Pierce got elected they died off. Since the debates about slavery became more prominet seeing the North and South fighting over slavery. We see more of it in the Bleeding Kansas as people actually fought over about slavery.
